Ingredients:

  • 12 oz. coconut oil
  • 12 oz. olive oil
  • 12 oz. palm oil (choose sustainably sourced)
  • 9 oz. raw goat milk (frozen in small chunks)
  • 4.3 oz. lye (sodium hydroxide)
  • Optional: essential oils or dried herbs for scent and texture

Equipment:

  • Safety goggles and gloves
  • Stainless steel pot
  • Digital scale
  • Thermometer
  • Immersion blender
  • Soap mold
  • Parchment paper

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace:
    • Safety first: Wear goggles and gloves to protect yourself. Make sure your working area is well-ventilated.
  2. Freeze the Goat Milk:
    • Pour the goat milk into an ice cube tray and freeze until solid. This step is crucial to prevent the milk from scorching when mixed with lye.
  3. Mix the Lye and Goat Milk:
    • Slowly add the lye to the frozen goat milk, stirring constantly. The milk will gradually melt. Keep stirring until the lye is fully dissolved and the mixture is creamy. Monitor the temperature to keep it below 85°F to avoid burning the milk.
  4. Melt the Oils:
    • In a large pot, gently melt the coconut, olive, and palm oils together until fully liquid.
  5. Combine Oils and Lye Mixture:
    • Once both the oil mixture and lye/milk mixture are around the same temperature (80°F-90°F), slowly pour the lye mixture into the oils. Stir briefly to combine.
  6. Blend to Trace:
    • Use an immersion blender to blend the mixture until it reaches “trace,” the point where it thickens to a pudding-like consistency.
  7. Add Extras:
    • If desired, add your choice of essential oils, dried herbs, or other additives and blend briefly to distribute evenly.
  8. Pour and Cure:
    • Pour the soap mixture into molds lined with parchment paper. Cover and insulate for 24 hours, then unmold and cut into bars. Cure the soap bars on a rack in a cool, dry place for 4-6 weeks before using.

This easy goat milk soap recipe not only provides a wonderful homemade product but also introduces you to the joys and benefits of crafting your own natural soaps. Enjoy the process and the luxurious results!
