Homemade Avocado Oil: A Simple DIY Guide Using Avocado Seeds and Peels

Avocado oil is a versatile and healthy addition to your kitchen, packed with nutrients and great for cooking or skincare. Instead of buying it from the store, why not make your own at home? Here’s a simple guide to creating homemade avocado oil using avocado seeds and peels. This method is not only cost-effective but also ensures you get the purest oil possible.

Ingredients:

  • Avocado seeds (from 4-5 avocados)
  • Avocado peels (from 4-5 avocados)
  • 2 cups of water

Equipment:

  • Blender or food processor
  • Saucepan
  • Cheesecloth or fine strainer
  • Glass jar for storage

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Avocado Seeds and Peels:
    • Collect the seeds and peels from 4-5 avocados. Rinse them thoroughly to remove any remaining avocado flesh.
  2. Dry the Seeds and Peels:
    • Spread the seeds and peels on a baking sheet. Allow them to air dry in a warm, sunny spot for about 2-3 days until they are completely dry. Alternatively, you can use a dehydrator or an oven set to the lowest temperature for a few hours.
  3. Blend into a Powder:
    • Once dry, place the seeds and peels in a blender or food processor. Blend until you achieve a fine powder.
  4. Boil the Mixture:
    • Transfer the avocado powder to a saucepan and add 2 cups of water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Strain the Liquid:
    • After simmering, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool slightly. Use a cheesecloth or fine strainer to strain the liquid into a bowl, ensuring you squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
  6. Extract the Oil:
    • Let the strained liquid sit undisturbed for a few hours. You will notice the oil beginning to separate and rise to the top. Carefully spoon the oil into a glass jar.
  7. Store Your Avocado Oil:
    • Store your homemade avocado oil in a cool, dark place. It should keep for up to a month.

Tips for Use:

  • Cooking: Use your avocado oil for sautéing, grilling, or as a dressing for salads.
  • Skincare: Apply a small amount of oil to your skin for a natural moisturizer or use it as a hair treatment to add shine and reduce frizz.

Creating your own avocado oil at home is a rewarding and eco-friendly way to make the most of every part of the avocado. Enjoy the benefits of this homemade oil in your culinary and beauty routines!
