Easy Homemade Mozzarella Cheese with Just Two Ingredients

Making your own mozzarella cheese at home is easier than you might think! With just two simple ingredients, you can enjoy fresh, delicious mozzarella cheese in no time. Follow this straightforward recipe to create your own homemade mozzarella cheese.

Ingredients:

  • 1 gallon of whole milk
  • 1 tablet of rennet or 1/4 teaspoon of liquid rennet

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Milk:
    • Pour the whole milk into a large pot and heat it to 85°F (29°C). Use a thermometer to ensure accuracy.
  2. Add Rennet:
    • Dissolve the rennet tablet in 1/4 cup of cool, non-chlorinated water. If using liquid rennet, mix 1/4 teaspoon with the same amount of water.
    • Gently stir the rennet solution into the warm milk for about 30 seconds. Cover the pot and let it sit undisturbed for about an hour, or until the milk solidifies into a gel-like consistency.
  3. Cut the Curds:
    • Once the milk has set, use a long knife to cut the curd into 1-inch cubes. Let the curds rest for about 5 minutes.
  4. Heat and Stir:
    • Slowly heat the curds to 105°F (40°C) while gently stirring them with a slotted spoon. This process should take about 15 minutes.
    • Keep the curds at this temperature for another 5 minutes, continuing to stir gently.
  5. Drain the Whey:
    • Line a colander with cheesecloth and place it over a large bowl. Carefully pour the curds into the colander to drain the whey. Let it sit for a few minutes to drain thoroughly.
  6. Stretch the Curds:
    • Heat a pot of water to 185°F (85°C). Wearing rubber gloves, take a handful of curds and dip them into the hot water for a few seconds to soften.
    • Gently stretch and fold the curds repeatedly until they become smooth and elastic. If the curds cool down too much, dip them back into the hot water and continue stretching.
  7. Form the Mozzarella:
    • Shape the stretched curds into a ball or log. Place the cheese in a bowl of ice water to cool and set.
  8. Enjoy Your Mozzarella:
    • Once the cheese has cooled, it’s ready to eat! Enjoy your homemade mozzarella cheese in salads, on pizzas, or as a delicious snack.
