Making your own soap at home can be a fun and rewarding experience, especially when you use natural ingredients like avocado. Avocado is rich in vitamins and fats that are great for the skin, making it an excellent choice for homemade soap. Here’s a simple guide to help you craft your own fresh avocado soap.
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe avocado
- 10 oz. olive oil
- 10 oz. coconut oil
- 6 oz. palm oil (optional)
- 4 oz. shea butter
- 4 oz. lye (sodium hydroxide)
- 10 oz. distilled water
- 1 oz. essential oil of your choice (optional)
Tools:
- Digital scale
- Stick blender
- Mixing bowls
- Rubber gloves
- Safety goggles
- Soap mold
- Thermometer
Instructions:
- Prepare Your Workspace: Ensure your workspace is clean and well-ventilated. Put on your rubber gloves and safety goggles for protection.
- Prepare the Avocado: Peel the avocado and remove the pit. Mash the avocado in a bowl until it is smooth and free of lumps.
- Mix the Oils: Weigh out the olive oil, coconut oil, and palm oil (if using) and combine them in a large bowl. Add the shea butter and melt the mixture using a double boiler until all oils are fully liquid.
- Prepare the Lye Solution: Carefully weigh out the lye and distilled water. Slowly add the lye to the water (never the other way around) while stirring gently. This mixture will heat up quickly, so be cautious. Allow the lye solution to cool to about 100-110°F.
- Combine the Oils and Lye Solution: Once the oils and lye solution are both around the same temperature (100-110°F), slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Use a stick blender to mix until you reach “trace,” which is when the mixture thickens to a pudding-like consistency.
- Add the Avocado and Essential Oil: Add the mashed avocado to the soap mixture and blend thoroughly. If you’re using essential oils, add them now and mix well.
- Pour into Molds: Pour the soap mixture into your soap mold, smoothing the top with a spatula. Gently tap the mold on your countertop to remove any air bubbles.
- Cure the Soap: Cover the mold with a towel and let it sit for 24-48 hours to harden. Once hardened, remove the soap from the mold and cut it into bars. Place the bars on a drying rack and let them cure for 4-6 weeks, turning them occasionally to ensure even drying.
- Enjoy Your Homemade Soap: After curing, your fresh avocado soap is ready to use! Store the bars in a cool, dry place.
Benefits of Avocado Soap:
- Moisturizing: Avocado is packed with natural oils that help keep the skin hydrated.
- Nourishing: Rich in vitamins A, D, and E, avocado can help nourish and protect your skin.
- Gentle Cleansing: This soap is gentle enough for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
Making your own avocado soap at home is a wonderful way to treat your skin to natural, nourishing ingredients. Give it a try and enjoy the benefits of homemade, chemical-free skincare!
